Best Time for a Walking Safari in South Luangwa, Zambia

The dry season, June through October, is the best window for a South Luangwa walking safari — vegetation thins, animals concentrate along the river, and tracking conditions are at their clearest. Late September and October reward the heat with the highest game concentrations of the year.

Why South Luangwa specifically

South Luangwa is where the walking safari format originated, pioneered by conservationist Norman Carr in the 1950s. It remains one of the only places in Southern Africa where guided walking safaris are a core offering rather than an add-on — most parks built their tourism around vehicle-based game drives instead.

The season, month by month

  • June–July: Bush is still thinning out; mornings are cold (expect single-digit °C at dawn, often around 8°C / 46°F) but skies are reliably clear and walking conditions are comfortable.
  • August–September: Peak walking season. Vegetation is fully thinned, visibility is excellent, and animals are concentrated tightly along the Luangwa River as smaller water sources dry up. Daytime highs typically sit around 30–33°C (86–91°F).
  • October: "Suicide month" in local guiding parlance — brutally hot, often 38–40°C (100–104°F) by afternoon, but game viewing is at its absolute peak as animals crowd the last remaining water. Walks are typically done at first light to beat the heat.
  • November–May: Wet season. Many camps close or switch to vehicle-only game drives; walking safaris largely pause until the bush dries out again.

What to expect on a walk

Guided walks run in small groups (typically 4-8 people) with an armed scout and a licensed walking guide, usually 2-4 hours at a slow, deliberate pace focused on tracking, smaller wildlife, and the ecosystem itself rather than covering distance or guaranteeing Big Five sightings.

Traveller tip

Book June-July if you want cooler mornings and smaller crowds; book September-October if game density is the priority and you can handle the heat.
